On Sunday Night Football’s final regular season episode, the Lions will play the Vikings in Detroit with the NFC’s number one seed at stake. On October 20th, the Lions beat the Vikings 31-29 in Minneapolis.

Detroit lost to the LA Rams the following week, but they are now on a nine-game winning streak heading into Week 18. According to our favorite Super Bowl betting sites, the Lions are favored by three points at home.

NFC Seeding

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers can claim the NFC South division title with a win over the New Orleans Saints. If the Bucs lose, the Atlanta Falcons can win the division if they beat the Carolina Panthers.

If both teams lose, Tampa Bay will win the division.

The Washington Commanders and Green Bay Packers are the sixth and seventh seeds. If either team loses, the other can leap them in the standings with a win. If both teams lose, or both teams win, Green Bay will be #7 and the Commanders will be #6.

The San Francisco 49ers are no stranger to success in the Super Bowl.  They’ve been to the big game six times and have won five Lombardi trophies.  The 49ers’ last Super Bowl appearance was the only time San Francisco has lost on championship Sunday, a 34-31 defeat at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens in 2013.

San Francisco cannot fall into the trap of trying to keep pace by passing the ball on every down.  Jimmy Garoppolo has shown that he can put the team on his back and deliver a victory several times this season, but you don’t want to rely on his passing prowess in the biggest game of his lifetime.

It’s the Chiefs.  They’re elite.  The 49ers can’t hope to shut them down completely, so they need to be patient and continue to run the ball, even if it seems like the Chiefs are getting ahead or gaining momentum.  Eventually, the Kansas City defense will wear down, and rushing holes will begin to open up.

As James Jones of Sports Illustrated suggests, San Francisco cannot expect to contain Mahomes completely, but defensively, they’ll need to keep their foot on the gas pedal and maintain pressure.

If San Francisco can manage to stick to their game plan and use the tools that got them to the big game, eventually Kansas City will become one-dimensional and more desperate on offense.  They’ll need to take greater risks, and that could pay off in the form of turnovers for San Francisco’s defense.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Dexter Jackson was able to win MVP honors in Super Bowl 37 by intercepting two early passes that turned the tide of the game.  A downside of betting on Tyrann is that defensive players rarely win the MVP award. 

Richard Sherman – Cornerback, San Francisco

There is some potential for Richard Sherman, cornerback for the 49ers and Super Bowl 48 champion.  He is listed at +4000, but he is rarely thrown at these days because of his dominant play.  The key to a defensive player winning the MVP is creating or causing turnovers that matter. 

Von Miller achieved this in Super Bowl 50 by sacking Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and causing a fumble that resulted in a touchdown.   Seattle linebacker Malcolm Smith was MVP of Super Bowl 48 because of a fumble recovery and a 69-yard interception return for a touchdown.

If Sherman gets an interception from Patrick Mahomes, then I doubt that the Chiefs would throw in his direction again.  Richard would need an additional fumble recovery to take home the Super Bowl MVP trophy.  The odds of this are slim but could pay off well.

Harrison Butker – Kicker, Kansas City

Butker is currently listed at +10000 to win MVP for Super Bowl 54.  He has made 35 out of 39 field goals for a 90% average and has missed four extra points in 2019.  If the game ends up being tight, and Harrison can nail a couple of key field goals in a relatively low scoring game, then he can position himself as a potential MVP.  Only one problem: a kicker has never been named the MVP of a Super Bowl.

Gould has fought through injury this season and has been a solid performer when healthy, but he has only made one field goal over 50-yards this season, and that was in the NFC championship game vs. Green Bay.

Just like Butker, if Gould can nail a couple of long field goals in a tightly contested game, he could have a shot. He made six out of eight field-goal attempts between forty and forty-nine yards in 2019, so he can still put the ball between the uprights from a good distance.

Raheem Mostert – Running back, San Francisco

A running back has not won MVP since Terrell Davis did it for the Broncos in Super Bowl 32.  Raheem Mostert has become an intriguing candidate since posting monster numbers in the NFC Championship game – 29 carries for 220 yards and four touchdowns. 

Perhaps we are due for a running back to win MVP, and Raheem is sitting at +700 odds to do so, currently the third most likely candidate according to the betting odds. 

The only issue with Mostert is that he has no real history to pull from to predict his performance.  Mostert has shown flashes of brilliance but offers no long-term track record to make a bettor feel safe. 

George Kittle and Travis Kelce – Tight ends, San Francisco and Kansas City

A tight end has never won Super Bowl MVP.  Perhaps this could be the year.  Two of the top five potential MVPs, according to the odds, are tight ends.  George Kittle and Travis Kelce are tied for 4^th with +1400 odds to win MVP.  Considering how much Kittle and Kelce contribute to their respective offenses, they may be a fairly safe bet.

This betting line suggests that the Kansas City Chiefs will defeat the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 54 by a score of roughly 28.5 to 27. 

Last Friday, we published an article analyzing the games that the 49ers played this year, where both teams scored at least 24 points.  Today we’ll have a look at the games where the Chiefs were involved in high scoring shootouts, and how they fared. 

• Week One: Kansas City 40 – Jacksonville 26
  
  This game was never close.  The score was 37-13, with 11:02 remaining in the fourth quarter.   Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew orchestrated two late touchdown drives to make the final score respectable. Still, the Chiefs were firing on all offensive cylinders and put the Jaguars away early. 
  
  
• Week Three: Kansas City 33 – Baltimore 28
  
  This is another game where the Chiefs tried to put away their opponent early.  LeSean McCoy received a touchdown pass from Mahomes with 2:15 remaining in the third quarter to make the score 30-13.  Baltimore chipped away at the lead with two late touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough to catch the Chiefs.  Kansas City established a balanced offense, and Baltimore didn’t have an answer for Mahomes’ passing. 
  
  
• Week Four: Kansas City 34 – Detroit 30
  
  The Detroit Lions jumped out to a quick ten-point lead in the first quarter.  The Chiefs fought back, and the game was tied 13-13 at halftime.  Like a heavyweight boxing match, these two teams threw haymakers at one another until Kansas City put Detroit away with a Darrel Williams rushing touchdown with 0:23 to go in the game.   The Chiefs were lifted by a 100-yard fumble return touchdown by Bashaud Breeland in the 3^rd quarter.  Patrick Mahomes didn’t throw any touchdowns or interceptions.  It was a team effort that delivered the W for the Chiefs.
  
  
• Week Six: Houston 31 – Kansas City 24
  
  Kansas City appeared to have the game in control early, building a 10-0 lead in the first quarter.  Houston stormed back and scored quickly, taking a 23-17 lead into halftime.  The Texans sealed the victory with a Deshaun Watson quarterback keeper for a 1-yard touchdown with 6:24 remaining in the game.  Houston was able to shut down the running game of the Chiefs, allowing only 53 yards on the ground and making them one dimensional on offense.  The passing game for the Chiefs was still strong, with Mahomes passing for 273 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.  This proves two things.  One, it may not be possible to shut down the passing efforts of Mahomes.  Two, to beat the Chiefs, the opposing defense needs to respect the run.
  
  
• Week Ten: Tennessee 35 – Kansas City 32
  
  This game played out similarly to the Detroit game from week four.  The Chiefs built an early 10-0 lead, but the game was 13-13 at halftime.  The Titans and Chiefs traded scores in the second half, in a game where the team that possessed the ball last would likely win.  The Titans scored the go-ahead touchdown with 0:32 remaining in the game with a 23-yard Ryan Tannehill to Adam Humphries pass.  Everything seemed to be clicking for the Kansas City offense, so this is merely a case of them being outscored in a close game.  The Titans were dedicated to the run game, giving Derrick Henry 23 carries for 188 yards and two scores.  The Chiefs’ defense did not have an answer for Henry and couldn’t stop the Titans on the final drive of the game. 
  
  
• Divisional Round of Playoffs: Kansas City 51 – Houston 31
  
  The Houston Texans entered the game with confidence, handing the Chiefs a rare defeat earlier in the season in week six.  Houston jumped out to a 24-0 lead early in the second quarter, and many assumed that Andy Reid’s quest for a Super Bowl title will have to wait for yet another year.  The Chiefs had other plans, as they rallied to score four touchdowns in the second quarter and took a lead of 28-24 into halftime.  The game would never be in doubt after that as the Chiefs administered an offensive clinic that Houston had no answer for.  Kansas City has proven that they can overcome an early, seemingly insurmountable deficit, and not only win but blow the other team out.  I do not envy coaches that are trying to prep to defend against the Kansas City offense.
  
  
• Conference Championship Game: Kansas City 35 – Tennessee 24
  
  Once again, the Kansas City found themselves down 10-0 early in the first half but managed to carry a lead into halftime with a score of 21-17.  The Titans scored a late touchdown to make the final score a respectable 35-24, but Kansas City’s 28 unanswered points put Tennessee away early in the fourth quarter.  The Titans defense was able to contain the Chiefs running game and keep the score close for a while, but Patrick Mahomes picked up the slack with a few runs of his own, including a 27-yard touchdown run just before halftime.

The Chiefs are 5-2 over these seven games.  The only game where the final score was within 3 points ended up being a loss to Tennessee. 

The only close score victory that the Chiefs have all year is a 26-23 victory over Minnesota in week nine, and Patrick Mahomes did not play in the game due to injury. 

The odds the Chiefs’ win Super Bowl 54 are holding strong, but they don’t have a victory in the books for 2019 that resembles the predictions of the oddsmakers.  Keep this in mind when considering your Super Bowl betting options. 

For this analysis, we removed the week ten loss to Green Bay because Patrick Mahomes was injured and did not play.

Most sportsbooks have Kansas City favored to win at -120, meaning a bet of $120 will earn you $100 if the Chiefs win.  The over/under is hovering around 54 points, so most Super Bowl 54 predictions suggest that this will be a close, high-scoring game.

The 49ers have been involved in some nail-biting shootouts this year. Let’s examine the results, how they got there, and whether any of them were close games.  For this analysis, we’re setting the bar at 24 points per team to consider it a shootout.  The 49ers have been involved in five games where this has occurred during the 2019 season.

• Week 9: San Francisco 28 – Arizona 25
  
  Despite a late 10-point flurry from Arizona, the 49ers held on to defeat the Cardinals.  Jimmy Garoppolo proved to doubters that he could pass the ball effectively when needed, compiling 317 yards and four touchdowns and completing 28 out of 37 passes.  This game got close late, but the 49ers handled their business early and came out victorious.

• Week 10: Seattle 27 – San Francisco 24 (OT)
  
  The 49ers showed some heart and rallied late to take the game to overtime, but the Seahawks prevailed with a field goal as time expired.  This home loss knocked San Francisco from the ranks of the unbeaten and opened the door for the Seahawks to win the NFC West.  Seattle managed to contain the 49ers running game and win in what has become one of the more intriguing rivalries in the NFL.

• Week 11: San Francisco 36 – Arizona 26
  
  49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo had another excellent day passing, completing 34 out of 45 yards for 424 yards and four touchdowns.  After an early 16-0 Cardinals lead, San Francisco abandoned the run, and Jimmy showed that he could lead his team to victory with his passing capabilities.  The 49ers totaled 34 yards rushing as a team for the game.

• Week 14: San Francisco 48 – New Orleans 46
  
  The 49ers needed every tool in the shed to get the job done against New Orleans.  Garoppolo had another massive game with 349 yards and four touchdowns on 26 of 35 passing.  The running game stepped in with a team total of 162 yards, led by Raheem Mostert with 69 yards and a touchdown.  San Francisco was able to keep on punching and eventually take the lead for good after a legendary 39-yard reception by George Kittle set up the game-winning field goal.  This victory gave the 49ers control of their own destiny for the upcoming playoffs.

• Week 16: San Francisco 34 – Los Angeles Rams 31
  
  The Rams were playing for their playoff lives, but the 49ers needed to win their remaining games to secure the number one playoff seed in the NFC.  Los Angeles built an early lead, but the game turned once Fred Warner intercepted a Jake Goff pass and took it 46 yards to the house.  San Francisco rode that momentum and won the game, even though their overall offensive performance was mediocre. 

The San Francisco 49ers have a record of 4-1 when both teams score more than 24 points.  Considering that the 49ers’ strength lies in their defense, it shows a lot of overall team balance when the offense can come through and score the requisite points needed to win through a variety of means.

The 49ers are also 4-1 in games decided by 3 points or less.  They have what it takes to win the close games as well as high-scoring shootouts, and this should be factored in when considering your Super Bowl betting options.

The Chiefs began the year as a preseason favorite to win the Super Bowl after last season’s disappointing defeat at home to the New England Patriots in the AFC championship game.  Super Bowl 4 was the last time that Kansas City advanced to the title game, and it was also the Chiefs’ last Super Bowl win.

The 49ers were not on anyone’s championship radar at the start of the season and were picked to finish third in the NFC West by some publications.  Head Coach Kyle Shanahan has exceeded all expectations and is ahead of schedule for a 49ers Super Bowl victory. 

This marks the 7^th appearance in the Super Bowl for the 49ers.  San Francisco is attempting to win their 6^th title, which will tie them for the franchise lead with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl chances rest primarily on the shoulders of quarterback and former league MVP, Patrick Mahomes.  In both playoff games this year, he has helped the Chiefs overcome large early deficits with his explosive arm strength.  

The most interesting matchup will be the 49ers offense vs. the Kansas City defense.  If the Chiefs cannot stop the running game of the 49ers, then it could result in a shootout with Kansas City struggling to keep pace.
